New Hana features

Hana got a new set of features that make it even easier to create 2D/3D visuals. First off, a new pencil tool to draw directly on your Hana canvas. This will match great with gradient and image strokes, which is another new feature. Frames can be used as a fill for 3D meshes, which will be nice with the pencil tool so you can draw directly onto a 3D shape. To keep all of that organized, you can use pages to split up different frames, and last but not least, you can now copy + paste directly from Figma.

Figma vector improvements

Figma added multiple shape editing improvements this week, first off Vectorize images. We've all used plugins or other tools to vectorize a logo or something similar, but it's now finally built into Figma. Making it much faster to edit an bitmap image by recoloring it, moving elements, ...

Tip: If you don't get good results, try to remove the background and boost the resolution with Figma's AI features before vectorizing the image.

Bounding boxes for vector editing

A bounding box will now appear after selecting multiple vector points of a shape. This allows you to resize, rotate, and move all the points at once. Making it much easier to change your icons or illustrations. You can make a selection by drawing a box over the points, using the lasso tool, or selecting individual vector points.

Other Figma improvements

A few smaller ones, but nice to have features: All emojis can now be used as stamps or emotes in FigJam. All 2025 iPhones (iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and Air) are now available as device frames. Plus, Figma is now available in Google Chat as an add-on so you can see previews of Figma files when sharing a link or get notifications for new invites, requests, or comments.

Empty States for CMS lists in Framer

You would've thought this was an initial CMS feature, but guess what it wasn't, but it is now. CMS lists can now preview the empty state when no items are added or when you filter a list without results. You can also edit the empty state, choose the visibility rules, or change the design.

Dive Club episodes

Two great new Dive Club videos were published about Rive and Design Engineering.

Rive

In this episode, the founders of Rive explain their vision for Rive before and after they reach v1 (yes, they're still working on their 1.0 release). They explain how the latest new features like feathering, data binding, and scripting make Rive that much more powerful and how companies like Spotify took advantage of it for their 2025 Wrapped. They also go into depth about what makes the Rive runtime special, why there was a need to build Rive, and what the future holds (think video, 3D, and a sort of plugin support via scripting).

Tips for Design Engineers

This episode is a deep dive with Karl Koch, design engineer at DuckDuckGo and creator of the Design Engineer course released last week. He shows how LLMs can make "bad" decisions by going for the next most probable solution, which isn't always the best one. Having a good understanding of core engineering principles is key to becoming a design engineer, as you can't just vibe code your way to build production-ready code (as of now). They also talk about the need for more generalists in the age of AI and what sets design engineering apart from front-end design.
